Dominican Republic Destination Weddings
Dominican Republic is an amazing place to get married. With picturesque Caribbean beaches, an assortment of first-rate accommodations, well-developed infrastructure, and easy accessibility from the US, few locales can match such offerings. The old world charm of the country can be seen everywhere, and the natural beauty of the Dominican Republic is mesmerizing. Having been there several times and written a destination wedding article on the Dominican Republic, it remains one of my top picks for weddings outside the US.
The DR boasts a thriving wedding industry that can accommodate any vision. Good planning is key to any successful wedding, but perhaps even more so with destination weddings. Consequently, having a good wedding planner in the Dominican Republic is key. With the recent natural disaster in neighboring Hati and health related cautions, it is important to keep an eye on what is going on the ground, and a great wedding planner such as Richard can be a great first line of contact.
The country features a wide array of wedding location options. While the south of the DR is very developed with dozens of suitable properties, my focus is more on the boutique options such as smaller hotels, villas, and more intimate settings in the North of the Island. These wedding venue options, offer some of the most unique and authentic places.
Bellow are some great resources for couples interested in weddings in the Dominican Republic, that I personally scoped out for my clients. Also please check out the first Dominican Republic destination wedding article I created for Destination I do magazine.
Located on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic, Casa Kimball offers the ultimate in luxury and relaxation. Situated on the cliff of the Orchid Bay Estates, this 20,000 square foot villa features an incredible infinity pool and jacuzzi, providing both comfort and incredible views, securing its spot as one of the top DR villas. Furthermore, Casa Kimball is a paragon of modern architecture, having been designed by Rangr Studio. For instance, every entrance, hallway and staircase has a window or a central feature to gaze on as one navigates through the property. The flow from inside to outside is seamless. The guests can control their environment with precision through state of the art entry ways and lighting controls.
This gorgeous villa, also located in Orchid Bay Estates, features Italian-Tuscan architecture on a gorgeous 15,000+ sq ft ocean front property. Featuring a large zero-entry pool, this location is ideal for an outdoor/indoor wedding ceremony and reception. On-site wedding planner is available to make all the arrangements for an unforgettable wedding. The 8 beds in this villa can house up to 16 people. The beauty of the villa wedding, especially in Orchid Bay, is that guests can stay in clusters of villas, visiting neighboring properties. More information on Villa Castellamonte can be found in my Destination I Do article on Dominican Republic.
Bali Dreams is another luxury villa worth noting. Although the property itself is somewhat small for a larger wedding, it is still a perfect option for an intimate ceremony. Much of the time this house is used to accommodate extra guests from one of the larger villas such as Casa Kimball and Villa Castellamonte. The 7,200 square foot structure features an Asian inspired design, based on a Balinese villa concept. The 5 bedroom villa offers a pool and jacuzzi, and the master bedroom features a tub and outdoor showers.
Cantamar at Sea Tree Estates
Located on the North Coast, Sea Tree Estates, is the newest luxury villa development. Cantamar was one of the first properties there and is located on one of the best pieces of land. The cliff-face villa offers incredible views and sunsets. The zero-entry pool blends in with the trees and other natural elements, giving it the gentle look of a pond. Telling the master bedroom apart from the others may be tough at first glance, as they all have ample size and ameneties. The 4 bedroom villa offers private tubs, outdoor showers, and beautiful views. The kitchen is connected to the dining room with double glass doors, giving the guests a revealing view into the workings of the private chef in the kitchen. The large open space makes Cantamar an ideal choice for a villa wedding or a luxurious retreat.
Flor de Cabrera
This beautiful 10 bedroom villa offers a comfortable and spacious option for weddings of any size. Both, an on-site and a US based wedding planner are available and are top-notch, ensuring that your wedding and the time at the villa are unforgettable. The villa offers beach access, swimming pool, and a gorgeous private tub in the master bedroom. Flor de Cabrera is located in Orchard Bay Estates down the road from Bali Dreams, Castellamonte, and Casa Kimball. One of the unique features of the villa is that it is a non-profit organization, with all the profits going to help local school children get a proper education through the Ceed Foundation. Some of the fees for the villa can be paid in school supplies which is a tax deduction. Can we say win/win?
This 8 bedroom villa has all the amenities for a great time. Designed with entertainment in mind, the villa has many great amenities such as games and onsite activities. Villa Sunrise handles weddings of a variety of sizes and can hold 16 adults and up to 26 adults and children. The bedrooms are separate from the living areas, making it easy to get away from it all. Conveniently located next to the beach, this villa is a perfect location for that sand beach wedding you’ve always dreamed about.
Villa Lazy Heart
You will slowly fall in love with this gorgeous villa that has captures the essence of Dominican hospitality. The wooden furniture and brightly painted rooms of Villa Lazy Heart are done in the traditional Dominican style. The 10 acres offer an affordable villa experience, without sacrifice. The spacious 10 bedroom villa can hold upto 26 adults, and is located on pristine beach front property. The staff is super friendly, and the 2 dogs will be loyal and even stay with you on a midnight star gaze on the beach.
Villa Cabo Fino
This sea-cliff villa is just gorgeous, containing an impressive 10 bedrooms with 12,000 square feet of living space. Enjoy the pool or get over to the jacuzzi whirlpool “love cave”. Villa Cabo Fino is complete with a grass tennis court and all the standard amenities you would expect form a world class Dominican villa. Like some other properties, this villa is spread out with enough privacy for those who need it.
Sea Horse Ranch
Sea Horse Ranch is a development in the town of Sousa on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic. Most homes are private residences, many of which are available for rental. There are some amazing deals on smaller 3-4 bedroom villas, especially in the off-season. The Sea Horse Ranch website has some good information for the rentals. It also offers a tennis club, sea side pools, and a Beach Club. The Beach Club is a perfect venue for a wedding. Here is a Dominican Republic Sea Horse Ranch wedding that I recently shot at the Beach Club.
The Palace at Playa Grande
The Palace was originally named the Belaji Palace, after the New York owner. The property completed mid 2010 after 7 years of construction. Modeled after an Indian palace, this incredible property features quality art and architecture, some imported from India. The cliff-side suites offer an amazing experience, allowing guests to stay in a unique room with an unobstructed view. Although the Palace is run more like a hotel now, the option for a villa experience is available and is recommended for weddings. This property features a spa. It is also conveniently located right next to one of the most exquisite golf courses in the world, The Playa Grande Golf Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr.
One of the more luxurious options in Puerto Plata, Casa Colonial offers a high-end spa and resort experience. One of the main features of this hotel is the spa, elegantly designed to Feng Shui principles. It features various treatments, including hydro therapy. The hotel is not as large as some of the neighboring all-exclusive hotels, and is not over run with vacationers. It offers a more private and refined setting for weddings and it is small enough that a complete or partial buyout may be good options.
Gran Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado
Located on a mile-long island, this all-inclusive resort offers couples a unique experience for their wedding. Although I am not a big fan of large resorts, I have to say that this property did win me over. The unique experience of being on a small island is a major selling point for this resort. Taking a path, or an effortless elevator ride up the cliff-side if you prefer, guests can enjoy a panoramic view of the island and the sea. The island is located off the Samana peninsula, offering some exciting day trips for those couples who wish to leave this charming island.
